The '''Black Castle''' has a single save point at the very top, right before the boss. If not using save states, be sure to give yourself time to finish the dungeon. As a mandatory part of the story you will encounter the White Flame Researcher who serves as a rest spot. He is located on the first floor of the castle, in the room with the glowing light pillar.

The Black Castle is a gone forever location. You can't backtrack to Kazas after agreeing to take Popo's secret entrance into the castle, and you can't return to the Black Castle after defeating Doel. Be sure to get everything you want while you are here. The Material Shield is a unique repeat item, this is your only chance to collect it. The Beast Fang is a nice pickup as its a good weapon for Haschel at this point in the game. There is no stardust in the Black Castle itself, however there are six pieces back in Kazas (you can collect them later).

Likewise, after defeating Emperor Doel, the Black Castle becomes completely inaccessible. The Material Shield is a unique repeat item that can only be collected here. Most enemies in the Black Castle appear on screen (a few encounters are scripted or forced). When the player walks too close they whistle and run at you. Battle starts on contact. The Sandora Elite has his own model. While not nearly as tough as his Hoax version, he almost counts as a mini-boss. Enemies will respawn if you rest at the White Flame Researcher or return to the caverns screen.
