Element
An element is a characteristic that modifies a combat unit's weaknesses and resistances in battle. Sometimes an element is referred to in-game as a "base." All nine playable party characters have an element, and so does almost every enemy. Some attacks, especially magical attacks, also have an element. There are a total of seven elements: fire, water, wind, earth, light, darkness, and thunder. A unit without an element is considered to be non-elemental.
Identifying Elements
In combat, an actor's element is determined by the color of the window displaying their name when selected. The elements and their corresponding colors are as follows respective to the graphic to the right in descending order:
- red is fire, sometimes called "flame"
- blue is water, sometimes called "ice"
- green is wind
- brown is earth
- yellow is light
- dark blue is darkness
- magenta is thunder, sometimes called "lightning"
- grey is non-elemental
Notice that although the game specifically identifies the color of thunder as magenta, or pink, it is arguably actually violet, or purple. Except in this article specifically, this wiki also identifies elements with certain stylization. They are: Fire Water Wind Earth Light Darkness Thunder and non-elemental.
Resistance and Weakness
Like resists like. Whenever a combat actor is targeted by an attack that has the same element as the actor, the attack deals half of the normally expected damage. For example, a fire-elemental attack that normally does 10 damage before accounting for element will deal only 5 damage to Dart or any other fire-elemental actor.
Six of the seven elements have an opposing element. Whenever a combat actor is targeted by an attack of the opposing element, the attack deals double the normally expected damage. For example, a water-elemental attack that normally does 10 damage before accounting for element will deal 20 damage to Dart or any other fire-elemental actor. The opposing elements are:
- fire opposes water
- wind opposes earth
- light opposes darkness
Thunder and non-elemental have no opposition, and they do normal damage to all targets regardless of element.
