Experience points, or EXP, are gained by defeating opponents in battle. As characters gain experience, their level increases. Leveling up provides incremental boosts to combat stats like attack, defense, and hit points.

Distribution

When EXP is awarded to the party, it is divided. If all three active party members survived the encounter, then the EXP is split three ways (rounded down). If two party members are alive, the EXP is split in half. A sole survivor collects all the experience. A knocked-out party member will not gain experience.

Inactive party members receive some experience from battles as well. It is based on whether all three, two, or just one of the active party members survived the battle. In all cases the amount received is half. As an example, suppose the battle yields 6- EXP. If all three party members survive, they get 20 EXP and benched members get 10. Two surviving party members get 30 EXP; the benched members get 15. If only one of the three active members survives the battle, they get 60 EXP and benched members get 30.
