Defining Elements
Elements can enhance or diminish damage during combat depending on whether attacks and their targets share an element or are opposites. While there are 8 elements, each combatant and magical attack possesses one predetermined element that never changes. With the use of certain weapons, party members can also imbue their physical attacks with an element as well. A combatant's element is revealed by the color of the window displaying their name when selected. The elements and their corresponding colors are as follows respective to the graphic to the right in descending order:
- Fire
- Water
- Wind
- Earth
- Light
- Darkness
- Thunder
- Non-Elemental
Opposing Elements
With the exception of Thunder and Non-Elemental , each element has an opposite. They can be paired together as:
- Fire and Water
- Wind and Earth
- Light and Darkness
Variable Multipliers
- When an attack and its target are opposite elements, such as Fire and Water , the attack is increased by a 1.5x damage multiplier.
- When an attack and its target are the same element, excluding Non-Elemental , the attack is reduced by a 0.5x damage multiplier.
When using the Special command during combat, the element of the Dragoon who initiated the transformation becomes an additional variable modifier until they transform back.
- When an attack and the element of the Special field are opposites, such as Earth and Wind , the attack is reduced by a 0.5x damage multiplier.
- When an attack and the element of the Special are the same, excluding Non-Elemental , the attack is increased by a 1.5x damage multiplier.
- This increase and reduction applies to abilities used by allies and enemies. For example: If Meru's Special field is active, an enemy's Spear Frost (Water) will get a damage boost when used on your party. Conversely, if an ally uses Spinning Gale (Wind) while Kongol's Special field is active, the damage will be reduced.
Note: The Divine Dragoon Special field applies a 1.5x damage multiplier only to its own spells of Divine DG Cannon and Divine DG Ball.
Sources of Elemental Damage
Physical Damage
- The five elemental weapons: Sparkle Arrow, Twister Glaive, Heat Blade, Shadow Cutter, and Thunder Fist.
Magical Damage
- Most Attack Items.
- Most Dragoon Spells.
- Enemy magical attacks.
Trivia
- Although the game identifies the color of Thunder as magenta, its hue in HSL is ~273 which rests between blue (240) and magenta (300) making the actual color violet.
