When The Legend of Dragoon was ported to North America and later Europe, several changes were implemented from visuals to stats. Below is a breakdown of known changes.
Combat Abilities
There are a few cases where battle moves differ between regions.
- Zieg Feld cannot use Explosion outside of the original Japanese release. The spell is disabled in all other releases, but can be reactivated through modding and plays without issue. Due to the appearance of the fireballs, one possible explanation is that the spell was unfinished, and the devs merely forgot or ran out of time to deactivate it before the release in Japan.
- Kamuy cannot use a pink claw attack outside of the Japanese release. In all other releases it is disabled but can be reactivated through modding. While the attack doesn't appear overtly incomplete, it might have been a moveset cleanup in order for other attacks to be used more often.
- One of the Dragoon spells, Demon's Gate, is censored in many editions. In the original release, Rose's animation includes red blood dripping to the ground. Most ports had this censored to black drops, to make it appear less gruesome and more fantasy-friendly.
Color-coding & Controls
Each of the following line items are based on the original Japanese release. For all ports, the controls and color were swapped.
- When browsing Equipment in the Armed sub-menu, the Japanese edition displays red numbering for a stat increase, and blue numbering for a stat decrease.
- When performing Additions, the Circle button is used to chain the combo while the X button is used to bypass an enemy's attempt to counterattack.
- The use of magic attacks marked with "(multi)" require the player to repeatedly press the Circle button, where the X button is required for other editions.
Difficulty Adjustment
After the game released in Japan, the developers decided the difficulty was too high so they implemented the following changes for future releases:
- Generally reduced HP of all Enemies by 20-25%. Some had more severe reductions such as the Mountain Ape whose 1,800 HP was lowered to 1,000 in the NTSC-U/C edition.
- Damage from item magic was increased. However this also includes item magic used by Enemies. For example, Lenus does more damage with Dark Mist in the NA and EU versions.
Pocketstation Minigame
Due to the Pocketstation's international release being canceled, Legend of Dragoon has a minigame exclusive to the Japanese edition of the game. This minigame, loosely "MoGuru Dabas," is about Dabas going on underground adventures mining tunnels and fighting monsters. Gold and treasure acquired here can then be transferred into Legend of Dragoon. In the original Japanese release, it was intended for this minigame to be the main source of gold. As a result of the Pocketstation being canceled internationally, gold dropped from foes was roughly tripled for the ported editions.
- A common misconception is that the Pocketstation minigame would have doubled the inventory limit for Items.
Dialogue
Some text was changed between the two English versions for NA and EU.
- In the Hero Competition, if defeated by Serfius he will still lose. In the NTSC-U/C edition, the attendant indicates that "his illness has gotten worsen." In the PAL / UK port, this is altered to read: "his illness has got worsen."
- All instances of the word "bastard" in the NA release were changed. Even the Bastard Sword was renamed to Long Sword. Names previously shown in red color were changed to have yellow coloring in some cases.
- In the Japanese Guidebook, the developers refer to the Moon That Never Sets as, "the Everlasting Moon." This is not a translation, it is written in English. This means it was changed to The Moon That Never Sets for the NA release. This is probably a creative liberty, however, the strange part is that the PAL UK release returns to calling it the Everlasting Moon. Exact reasoning for this back-and-forth is unknown.
Other
- In the Japanese release, losing to Lloyd in the Hero Competition before the scripted finishing move plays will result in a "Game Over." The NTSC English version allows the player to progress normally even if they lose early.
- According to website The Cutting Room Floor, the damage dealt by magic and item magic is increased for the NA and EU editions. It does not say if that is due to increased base power or a reduction in enemy MDF, but no further info or confirmation was ever provided on this point.
