==History==
Dragons are the 105th fruit of the Divine Tree, possessing great destructive power. About 11,682 years ago, their importance grew dramatically. Winglies were subjugating many species, including humans and Dragons. Eventually, Dragons became part of a bloody uprising. Humans had discovered that when a Dragon dies, they leave behind a magical gem which can be harnessed and used to don some of their abilities forever afterward. This gave humans a new power to rival the immense magical capabilities of the Winglies. Presumably, many Dragons were lost in the ensuing war known as the Dragon Campaign, as they are thought to be extinct in the present.

== Appearance ==
Dragons come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. The eyes are the prime similarity between them. Their shapes can very greatly, appearing as empowered versions of normal creatures like a mantis, beetle, or fish. Some even look otherworldly, with strange propulsion on their backsides.
== Characteristics ==
The abilities of any given Dragon vary wildly, made similar only by their eyes, magical properties, and thus their elemental attribute. Many, but not all, can fly.
== Hierarchy ==
All Dragons born to the world have two traits that determine where they fit in a hierarchy. Each Dragon is of a specific element, and has between 1-7 eyes. The eye count determines how much power a Dragon has, as well as whether they rule or are subservient to other Dragons. This eye count is important even when Dragons die to create Dragoon Spirits.

Dragoons also factor into this hierarchy, though it is only one-way. Dragoons are able to command Dragons with certain restrictions. First, the element must match. Second, the Dragoon Spirit of the Dragoon must have come from a Dragon with at least one more eye than the target living Dragon. For example, Rose's Dragoon Spirit came from a six-eyed Dragon. Therefore, she can command any Darkness-element Dragon with five or less eyes. Michael, Rose's vassal Dragon from the Dragon Campaign, meets this criteria.

Dragons are creatures that originated from the 105th fruit of the Divine Tree. Their appearance and abilities can vary greatly from one another, but most are capable of wide-spread destruction. Most vanished after the conclusion of the Dragon Campaign 11,682 years ago, leading many to believe them extinct.[1] Only a few rare survivors are known to have persisted afterwards. A book from the Mille Seseau national library claims that Dragons are, "...the second most powerful of all 108 creatures given life by the Divine Tree," and that Soa reduced their intelligence as a balance.

History

The Age of Winglies, more than ~11,000 years ago

During this time Dragons were plentiful. Two Divine Dragons fought one another to the death, with the victor becoming ruler of the Dragon race.[2] In Gloriano, Humans discovered that the eyes of a Dragon combined into one at the moment of death and could be taken at that critical moment.[3] This crystal came to be known as a Dragoon Spirit.

The Dragon Campaign, ~11,000 years ago

The Dragon Campaign began when Diaz, Emperor of Holy Imperial Gloriano, declared war on the Winglies at Fort Magrad. Dragoons and their Dragons clashed against the Winglies and their Virage, the backwash of which would continue to distort nature for thousands of years. Each Dragoon possibly fought alongside a personal Dragon, although the only confirmed one was Michael, the child of the Darkness Dragon which became Rose's Dragoon Spirit. They fought together in the final battle at Kadessa, where Michael assisted in defeating Virage.

The Age of Humans, Present Day

As most Dragons vanished at the end of the Dragon Campaign, many believed they were extinct. In Serdio, the green-tusked Dragon, Feyrbrand appeared under the control of Imperial Sandora, and an unnamed Dragon was used for magical research purposes in the Black Castle. In Tiberoa, the sea Dragon Regole appeared and harassed ships traveling through Illisa Bay. In Mille Seseau, the Divine Dragon broke free of its seal in the Mountain of Mortal Dragon and attacked Deningrad. Ultimately, all of these Dragons perished.

Each Dragoon is capable of summoning a Dragon to the battle using their final spell, although whether these creatures are truly living Dragons or just magical constructs is unclear. Outside of those appearing from Dragoon spells, there are currently no known Dragons left alive.

Dragon Ranks

Note: This information is not found in game and instead comes from the official guidebook.
As with Dragoon Spirits, a Dragon's rank is determined by the number of eyes they possess.[3] Dragons can also be commanded by Dragoons, becoming their subordinates. To do so, the Dragoon in question must match the Dragon's element and be of a higher rank. Dragons are subservient to Dragons of the same element with a higher rank.[4] The more eyes a Dragon has, the more powerful and the higher its rank as seen in chart below.

Eyes Rank Known Dragons/Spirits
7 1st Divine Dragon, Divine Dragon DS[5]
6 2nd "God Dragon" Red Dragon DS, Dark Dragon DS, Jade Dragon DS, Silver Dragon DS, Violet Dragon DS, Gold Dragon DS, and Blue Dragon DS[3]
5 3rd Michael[6]
4 4th "Ultimate Dragon" Regole[7]
3 5th "Dragon King" Feyrbrand[8]
2 6th -
1 7th Pseudo Dragons[9]
  • It is not known where the Dragon found in the Black Castle lies in the above chart, other than it cannot be the 1st rank.
