Hoax is a military fortress for the kingdom of Basil. It is on the front line, just north of Lohan. Dart and company arrive here to discuss the evolving war with Imperial Sandora.
Story
Upon arriving at the "town" of Hoax, Shana remarks that the town more closely resembles a fortress. Dart speculates that the war changed it, and Lavitz confirms that its transformation was an unwanted necessity. He recommends proceeding immediately to headquarters to report to Kaiser, the commander of Basil's Eighth Knighthood.
Kaiser is waiting for a group inside of a pub that has been converted to a war room. He expresses his condolences to Lavitz for the loss of the Seventh Knighthood. Lavitz pledges that he will honor the deaths of his troops by ending the war. Kaiser agrees. Lavitz introduces Dart and Shana. Word has traveled fast as Kaiser already recognizes Dart's name for his action at Hellena Prison.

Dart inquires into the standing of the Eighth Knighthood. Kaiser explains that the Knighthood is still preparing for a Sandora attack, emphasizing his concern for the involvement of a Dragon. Lavitz recommends a defensive response over moving to attack Sandora forces when a Dragon might be nearby.
Kaiser agrees and asks Dart and Lavitz to perform guard duty at night while Shana prepares meals for the garrison. Shana accepts and assures Dart that he will love it. Dart can either affirm that he looks forward to it or express skepticism. Either way, the conversation takes a distressing turn for Shana as Lavitz, Dart, and Kaiser all opine that whether or not it tastes good does not matter as long as there is plenty to go around.
Afterward, Dart and Shana leave the headquarters to familiarize themselves with Hoax while Lavitz stays behind to discuss a battle plan with Kaiser. While touring the town, they meet Gilda, a midwife, who asks when they expect to have their baby. Dart is taken aback, so Gilda explains that she presumed they must have wanted advice because they were visiting a famous midwife. Gilda goes on to say that he was the midwife for King Albert's birth. Upon Dart's speculation that she must be familiar with Serdio before the way, she tells him that 20 years ago, King Carlo passed away and Doel, Carlo's younger brother, estranged himself. She speculates that he was not comfortable deferring the throne to Albert, who was only six years old at the time. By the time they return to the headquarters, Kaiser and Lavitz have concluded their meeting.
Kaiser escorts Dart and Lavitz to their guard position, and the pair relieves the lone guard already on watch. Lavitz points out that Sandora will likely wait until nightfall to attack and urges Dart to rest while they still have daylight. That night, Dart muses that the sound of owls and other nocturnal creatures are reassuring because it indicates that there is no disruption in the forest. He decides to take the opportunity to leave the post and get "something," but on the way, the animals in the forest suddenly disperse.
A Sandora attack ensues with Sandora Soldiers coming over the ramparts on the other side of the fort. Dart and Lavitz rush to meet the invaders. During the battle, Dart and Lavitz momentarily split up with Dart moving to confront a particular enemy atop the wall. Lavitz dispatches a pair of soldiers in time to regroup with Dart and confront the Sandora Elite together. Upon slaying him, however, an even more menacing foe approaches from below. A Basil soldier flees in terror. Lavitz identifies the enemy as "giganto" and Dart moves in for battle, declaring that as large and fearsome as he, "he still is not a Dragon."
Despite their best efforts, Kongol overcomes the combined might of both Dart and Lavitz, even after willfully discarding his own weapon. As Dart rushes in for a decisive blow, Kongol easily rebukes him with a single punch. Kongol retrieves his axe and moves to bring it down on a fallen Dart, but the Giganto is distracted by a flying adversary who swoops in from above. In Dragoon form, Rose intercepts and deflects Kongol's axe. She declares to Dart to "wake up." An intense red glow overtakes Dart as Lavitz and Kongol both watch in awe.
Dart transforms into a Dragoon and quickly defeats Kongol with a fearsome tackle while engulfed in fire that sends the Giganto reeling through the air much to Lavitz's astonishment. Dart is just as surprised and looks to Rose for answers as she comes to the ground in her non-transformed state. Kongol and the rest of the surviving Sandora forces quickly retreat.
Dart collapses from the strain of the Dragoon transformation. While he is unconscious, Shana aggressively confronts Rose, suggesting that she did something to Dart. Rose is incredulous that she is being yelled at for saving Dart's life. Dart recovers and recognizes Rose as the passerby who saved him from Feyrbrand. Dart questions the authenticity of their reunification, so Rose confesses that she started following him when she realized that her own Dragoon spirit had responded to him.
Rose shows Dart her Dragoon spirit, which is glowing. Dart retrieves his father's memento, which is actually the Dragoon spirit of the Red-Eyed Dragon, and it glows in unison with Rose's stone. Rose explains that it is Dart's fate to be a Dragoon and rule over Dragons. Dart confesses that he had no idea his father's keepsake had such power.
Lavitz questions how Rose could know any of this information, but she dismisses him. He reiterates the legend of the Dragoons who were victorious in the Dragon Campaign. Rose provides no more insight. When asked if she only saved Dart because he had a Dragoon spirit, Rose confides that they ─ Dart, Lavitz, and Shana ─ remind her of some friends she had. Like the three of them, her friends were strong, decided their own fate, and knew what to fight for and who to protect. These descriptions echo conversations that Dart and the others had when Rose was not apparently present, such as the one they had on the balcony at Indels Castle.
Shana delicately asks about the condition of Rose's friends, and Rose tells her that they are dead now. Shana apologizes and sympathetically realizes that she may have misjudged Rose too quickly.
Suddenly, a voice calls for Kaiser. A soldier of Basil arrives in Hoax to deliver news that the Seventh Fort in the Marshland is under attack by the Dragon. Two more Knighthoods, the Tenth and Thirteenth, have almost been destroyed. Lavitz asks where the Dragon came from, and the messenger divulges that there is a nest in the vicinity of the Volcano Villude. Lavitz implores Kaiser to muster troops to march against Feyrbrand. Rose suggests otherwise, explaining that the only people with the power to kill a Dragon are Dragoons. Dart accepts the task with Rose determining to join him and the others.
As the party departs Hoax, they overhear Basil troops recounting the events of the previous night. At least one soldier even declares Dart to be a messiah. Rose is not so sure since Dart is a fledgling Dragoon. She offers to train him to use his new power, and then the four of them proceed to confront Feyrbrand.
