History
The Age of Winglies, more than ~11,000 years ago
The first Dragoon Spirit was obtained in Gloriano, when humanity discovered that the eyes of Dragons combined into one at the moment of death and could be taken at that critical moment. These powerful artifacts granted those who they recognized the power to transform into a Dragon Knight, a Dragoon. Armed with the power of Dragoons, the enslaved races fought against their oppressors in what would come to be known as the Dragon Campaign.

Lore
The Dragon Campaign, ~11,000 years ago
Origins
The Dragon Campaign began when Diaz, Emperor of Holy Imperial Gloriano, declared war on the winglies at Fort Magrad. Dragoons and their Dragons clashed against the winglies and their Virage, the backwash of which would continue to distort nature for thousands of years. The climax of the war came when the Dragoons assaulted the Royal Capital Kadessa, and sent it crashing to the ground. While most of the seven legendary Dragoons lost their lives, the wingly dictator was defeated resulting in the surrender of the remaining winglies.

Over eleven thousand years ago, humans were being enslaved by Winglies: a species with vast magical abilities. They and many other species were subjugated by the Winglies, even to the point of being pitted against each other in fatal arena matches. All of that would change with the discovery of the Dragoon - a mighty warrior combining human intelligence with the destructive force of a Dragon. It is a humanoid encased in organic Dragon flesh; and equipped with potent magical power. The first Dragoon spirit was discovered in Gloriano, a country established by human rebels at the start of the Dragon Campaign.
The seven legendary Dragoons consisted of Zieg Feld, Shirley, Syuveil, Rose, Kanzas, Belzac, and Damia. Each possibly fought alongside a personal Dragon, although the only confirmed one was for Rose: Michael, the child of the Darkness Dragon which became Rose's Dragoon Spirit. They fought together in the final battle at Kadessa, where Michael assisted in defeating the Virage.

When a Dragon dies, its eyes fuse together into a single gem - the Dragoon Spirit. This gem must be harvested within mere moments, else its power is forever lost. The gem can be harvested by anyone, but only select individuals may be recognized. If chosen, the individual may attempt to transform into a Dragoon. Every time they do so, there is a battle of wills. The spirit of the Dragon who died to make the Dragoon Spirit is inside it, and must be tamed with mental prowess by the wielder. In the event they cannot overcome the Dragon within, the latter will take control of the Dragoon form and wreak indiscriminate havoc. However, if successful, the wielder gains control of the form and can channel the Dragon's physical and magical strength in combat.
The Age of Humans, Present Day
Dragoons had not been seen since the end of the Dragon Campaign, and even Dragons had dwindled so much that many believed they were extinct.

Following this discovery, Emperor Diaz, the holy emperor, declared war on the Winglies at Fort Magrad. He sent seven Dragoons to spearhead an effort to liberate humans - and other species - from the domination of Wingly rule.
Dragoon Ranks
Note: This information is not found in game and instead comes from the official guidebook.
As with Dragons, a Dragoon Spirit's rank is determined by the number of eyes a Dragon possessed. Dragoons can also command Dragons as their subordinates. To do so, the Dragon in question must match the Dragoon's element and be of a lower rank. There are 7 ranks as seen in chart below.

Although humans gained the power of Dragons, Winglies had their own power play: Virage. These large, powerful creatures rivaled Dragons and even Dragoons. Winglies were somehow able to prevent them from fulfilling their original purpose; instead being used as puppets in the war. However, Dragoons could still compete with and overcome them.

Dragoon Spirits
Before transforming into a Dragoon, a party member must obtain their corresponding Dragoon Spirit. These are listed under Goods and are exclusively awarded for story progression except for the Gold Dragon DS which can also be obtained via purchase in Lohan after defeating Gehrich.

Spirit Points
Once a character's Dragoon Spirit has been obtained, they can begin earning Spirit Points (SP) in battle. These points go toward filling the new SP meter which allows a character to enter Dragoon form when full. While it takes 100 SP to fill the meter once, each Dragoon level a party member earns allows an additional 100 points to be stored to fill their meter multiple times. As taking a turn while transformed drains 100 SP from the meter, resulting in a de-transformation should the SP reach 0, each level of the SP meter effectively represents the number of remaining turns a character will remain in Dragoon form. When transforming, any stored SP that is not an increment of 100 is lost. For example, transforming with the meter filled to 180 will immediately reduce it to 100.

Sources of SP<br>
*Additions will award varying amounts.<br>
*Shana and Miranda earn SP for each successful attack with the amount increasing with their Dragoon level.<br>
*A Spirit Potion awards 100 SP.<br>
*A Recovery Ball can award 100 SP at a random chance.<br>
*The Spirit Ring awards 20 SP at the start of each turn.<br>
*Certain Equipment can award SP...<br>
**when damaged magically such as the Knight Helm, Giganto Helm, Jeweled Crown, Soul Headband, Robe, and Ruby Ring.<br>
**when damaged physically such as the Sparkle Dress, Master's Vest, Giganto Armor, and Saint Armor.<br>
*Certain Equipment increase the SP gained when using Additions or attacks such as the Fairy Sword, Pretty Hammer, Energy Girdle, and Wargod's Sash.

Dragoon Level
Each party member begins at Dragoon level (D'level) 1 and can level up to a maximum of 5. While in Dragoon form the attack, defense, magic attack, and magic defense stats gain a multiplier that increases with higher D'levels. Dragoons start with one magic spell and learn an additional spell every level except for level 4. Kongol is an exception as he does not learn a new spell at level 2. Each party member has a hidden threshold of accumulated SP that once earned increases their D'level by 1. SP continues to be accumulated towards leveling up even if the SP meter is currently maxed out so it is never necessary to actually transform in order to increase D'level. Dragoon stat bonuses and spells are viewable from the "Status" option on the System Screen.

Transformation
Once transformed, a character cannot de-transform except by running out of SP or by having their HP reduced to 0. While transformed, they cannot use the "Item", "Defend", or "Escape" commands. Instead, they gain two commands exclusive to Dragoon form; "D'Attack" and "Magic".

D'Attack
For party members other than Shana and Miranda: a "Spirit Meter," composed of a light and a compass, appears on screen and upon pressing the X button the first time the light will begin revolving clockwise inside of the compass. The objective is to press the X button each time the light returns to the starting position. D'Attacks may yield up to five strikes, except in the case of Kongol, who has a maximum of four. While a perfect D'Attack appears to be accompanied by an elemental effect, the attack does not deal elemental damage unless an elemental weapon is equipped. The D'Attack damage formula makes use of variable multipliers such as the fear status or the power up state, which are explained below.

Variable Multipliers
*Target Fear - if the Target has the Fear Status then (2) otherwise (1)
*Power - if no Power items used = (1), otherwise [(1) + (Attacker Power + Target Power)]
**Attacker Power - if the Attacker has power up then (1 / 2) or if power down then -(1 / 2)
**Target Power - if the Target has power up then -(1 / 2) or if power up then (1 / 2)
*Field - if the attack element neither matches nor is the opposite of special field = (1), otherwise [(1) + (Attack Element)]
**Attack Element - if the attack element matches the special field then (1 / 2) or if it's the opposite element then -(1 / 2)
*Element - if the Target Element neither matches nor is the opposite of attack element = (1), otherwise [(1) + (Target Element)]
**Target Element - if the Target's Element matches the attack element then -(1 / 2) or if it's the opposite element then (1 / 2)

Note: DRGNMAT% refers to the number seen on the status menu under the Dragoon column and on the MAT row. For Multipliers, please use the Dragoon Spells chart below the damage formula. The "STR %" shown when selecting spells in game is not used in the damage calculation. Instead they could be used to gauge the strength of spells in relation to one another for that specific character, but some of the values contain errors and so generally cannot be considered reliable.

As Dart nearly completes his journey home, he comes into brief conflict with a group of Sandoran soldiers. Before the fight begins, a large Dragon appears scaring the soldiers away. It engages Dart, forcing him to retreat through the forest. A passing warrior saves his life, noting the raid on the nearby village. As Dart sprints to his home, this warrior's Dragoon Spirit activates to indicate another one was on Dart.

*Rose Storm halves incoming damage by enabling the Power Up variable multiplier for party members when enemy damage calculation occurs. This can be observed in game as the item Power Up and Rose Storm do not stack. Additionally, attacks which do not include the Power Up state in their damage calculations such as any Rare Monster's Rare Attack and Ghost Commander's Haunting Bolt completely ignore Rose Storm.

The capabilities of a Dragoon will vary, but they generally have a similar pool of powers and follow key rules. Some may have a focus on offense or defense, single-target or area-of-effect attacks, healing, protection, and more. Abilities may differ between any two wielders of the same Dragoon Spirit as well. Some Dragoons have the ability to teleport. All Dragoons have a maximum flight speed of 1,200 kilometers per hour, meaning they can just barely break the sound barrier. <-- find and add reference-->
Special
The "Special" command only appears once all three party members have their SP meters at maximum capacity and none are in Dragoon form. Using it transforms all party members into Dragoon form and changes the background into the Dragoon Space matching the element of the character who initiated the command. The instigator's D'attacks will be completed automatically, bypassing the interactive spirit meter. When the instigator de-transforms, their Dragoon Space ends and the background reverts to its original appearance.

As with Dragons, a Dragoon's amount of power is determined by the number of eyes within the Dragoon Spirit. If for example a 5-eyed Dragon dies and its Dragoon Spirit is harvested, it becomes a five-eyed Dragoon Spirit.
Variable Multipliers<br>
The "Field" multiplier seen in several damage formulas is only applied when Dragoon Space is in effect. Despite the graphical appearance of Dragoon Space for Dragoon Spells that have "Dragon" in their name, the Field multiplier does not apply.
*Field - if the attack element neither matches nor is the opposite of special field = (1), otherwise [(1) + (Attack Element)]
**Attack Element - if the attack element matches the special field then (1 / 2) or if it's the opposite element then -(1 / 2)

Dragoons can also command living Dragons as their subordinates. To do so, the Dragon in question must match the Dragoon's element and have a lower number of eyes. In the historic Dragon Campaign, Rose commanded Michael, child of the Darkness Dragon which became Rose's Dragoon Spirit. They fought together in the final battle at Kadessa, where Michael assisted in defeating a large number of Virage.
Dragoon Space approximately increases elemental damage matching the character's element by 50%, while halving damage of the opposing element. For example, Dart's Dragoon Space increases Fire-elemental damage while reducing Water-elemental damage for all allies and enemies. Therefore, party members whose elements oppose one another will weaken each other when in their respective Dragoon Space.

Dragoon Spirits
Before a character can transform into a Dragoon, the player must acquire the character's corresponding Dragoon spirit. Dragoon spirits are goods, or quest items, only obtainable during prescribed story events, except for Kongol's, whose spirit has two possible acquisition methods.
Spirit Points
Once a character's Dragoon spirit has been obtained, that character will automatically begin earning Spirit Points, or SP, in battle. A character earns SP by attacking enemies normally with the Attack command. Different Additions will award varying amounts of SP. Shana and Miranda, who do not have any Additions, always earn the same amount of SP for each successful attack depending on their Dragoon level. SP is necessary for a character to be able to transform into a Dragoon in battle. Like EXP for the purpose of normal leveling, earning SP is also necessary for gaining Dragoon levels. SP can be awarded instantaneously with the use of a Spirit Potion. Like HP, SP has a maximum usable value in combat.
Dragoon Level
Like normal leveling, Dragoon transformations can also level up. Each Dragoon starts at level 1 and maxes at 5. Dragoon stat bonuses increase with their Dragoon level. Dragoons start with one magic spell and will learn an additional spell at each level except for level 4. Kongol is an exception; he does not learn a new spell at level 2. Dragoon level also increases maximum SP. SP is capped at 100 per Dragoon level. However, SP accumulation is never wasted for the purpose of leveling up. SP will continue to count toward leveling even if the character is already at maximum SP. It is never necessary to actually transform in order to level up. Dragoon stat bonuses are viewable from the Stats option on the System Screen.
Transformation
Characters may transform in battle by selecting the Dragoon command from the battle menu when they have at least 100 SP. A transformed character will remain in Dragoon form for one turn for every 100 SP the character had when they transformed. Any SP between intervals of 100 is lost. For example, if Dart transforms with 299 SP, his transformation lasts two turns, and the 99 surplus SP becomes 0. While transformed, a character cannot use the Item, Defend, or Escape commands. Therefore, transforming is a strategic decision, and sometimes, it may be wiser not to. It is not possible to manually revert. A transformed character automatically reverts at the end of their eligible turns. Having their HP reduced to 0 also forces a Dragoon to revert. Although the amount of SP a Dragoon has decreases each turn, the number of turns a transformation lasts is tracked by an invisible timer that is set at the time of transformation and ticks down each turn, not by the amount of SP the character has. Even if another character uses a Spirit Potion on a transformed character, their transformation will only last as long as it was eligible for when they transformed.
Additions
While in Dragoon form, one of the available commands is D-Attack. Like their non-transformed counterparts, Dragoons may perform Additions. However, the execution is different. A spirit meter, composed of a light and a compass, appears on screen. Upon pressing the Cross button the first time, the light will begin revolving clockwise inside of the compass. The objective is to press the Cross button again each time the light returns to the starting position. Dragoon Additions may yield up to five strikes, except in the case of Kongol, whose Addition has a maximum four strikes. If able to perform a perfect Dragoon Addition, the final strike is accompanied by a colorful special effect. Despite the appearance of this attack, it has no corresponding elemental damage. Dragoon Additions use the character's AT stat and its corresponding Dragoon level bonus. They do not award SP.
Magic
While in Dragoon form, Magic is the second available command. Attacking spells deal damage based on the character's MAT stat and the corresponding Dragoon level bonus. The various playable characters have an assortment of "specializations" with some of them focusing on dealing damage while others provide buffs and healing. Specific spells are viewable in the relevant party character article. Spells consume Magic Points, or MP, and each spell learned at higher Dragoon levels requires increasingly more MP to cast.
Special
Special is a Dragoon-related battle command usable in the non-transformed state. It requires that the battle party include three characters; that they are not currently transformed; and that they all have maximum SP. The Special command does not even appear until these conditions are met. When used, Special will transform all three party members simultaneously, and the battlefield will visually change to an "elemental field" corresponding to the character that used the Special command. The field increases elemental damage matching the character's element to twice normal while reducing the damage of the opposing element to half. For example, activating special with Dart increases Fire-elemental damage while reducing Water-elemental damage. These bonuses and penalties apply to all combat units equally. Therefore, Dart's Special will weaken Meru's Water-elemental magic and make her even more susceptible to Fire-elemental damage. When the character who activated Special expends all of their Dragoon turns, they and the elemental field automatically revert. If any other characters still have Dragoon turns left over, they will remain in Dragoon form.

While there were once many Dragoons during the Dragon Campaign, they along with the seven legendary Dragoons who spearheaded the war of liberation against the ruling winglies all vanished once the war ended.[1]

History

The Age of Winglies, more than ~11,000 years ago

The first Dragoon Spirit was obtained in Gloriano, when humanity discovered that the eyes of Dragons combined into one at the moment of death and could be taken at that critical moment.[1] These powerful artifacts granted those who they recognized the power to transform into a Dragon Knight, a Dragoon. Armed with the power of Dragoons, the enslaved races fought against their oppressors in what would come to be known as the Dragon Campaign.

The Dragon Campaign, ~11,000 years ago

The Dragon Campaign began when Diaz, Emperor of Holy Imperial Gloriano, declared war on the winglies at Fort Magrad. Dragoons and their Dragons clashed against the winglies and their Virage, the backwash of which would continue to distort nature for thousands of years. The climax of the war came when the Dragoons assaulted the Royal Capital Kadessa, and sent it crashing to the ground. While most of the seven legendary Dragoons lost their lives, the wingly dictator was defeated resulting in the surrender of the remaining winglies.

The Age of Humans, Present Day

Dragoons had not been seen since the end of the Dragon Campaign, and even Dragons had dwindled so much that many believed they were extinct.

Dragoon Ranks

Note: This information is not found in game and instead comes from the official guidebook. As with Dragons, a Dragoon Spirit's rank is determined by the number of eyes a Dragon possessed.[1] Dragoons can also command Dragons as their subordinates. To do so, the Dragon in question must match the Dragoon's element and be of a lower rank. There are 7 ranks as seen in chart below.

Eyes Rank Known Dragons/Spirits
7 1st Divine Dragon, Divine Dragon DS[2]
6 2nd "God Dragon" Red Dragon DS, Dark Dragon DS, Jade Dragon DS, Silver Dragon DS, Violet Dragon DS, Gold Dragon DS, and Blue Dragon DS[1]
5 3rd Michael[3]
4 4th "Ultimate Dragon" Regole[4]
3 5th "Dragon King" Feyrbrand[5]
2 6th -
1 7th Pseudo Dragons[6]

Mechanics

Sources of SP

  • Target Fear - if the Target has the Fear Status then (2) otherwise (1)
  • Power - if no Power items used = (1), otherwise [(1) + (Attacker Power + Target Power)]
    • Attacker Power - if the Attacker has power up then (1 / 2) or if power down then -(1 / 2)
    • Target Power - if the Target has power up then -(1 / 2) or if power up then (1 / 2)
  • Field - if the attack element neither matches nor is the opposite of special field = (1), otherwise [(1) + (Attack Element)]
    • Attack Element - if the attack element matches the special field then (1 / 2) or if it's the opposite element then -(1 / 2)
  • Element - if the Target Element neither matches nor is the opposite of attack element = (1), otherwise [(1) + (Target Element)]
    • Target Element - if the Target's Element matches the attack element then -(1 / 2) or if it's the opposite element then (1 / 2)

D'Attack Damage Formulas

For Formulas
Non-Archers floor[floor{floor[round{floor[floor{[0.05(Successful Inputs^2) - 0.05Successful Inputs + 1] * 100 * DRGNAT% / 100} * AT / 100] * (LV + 5) * 5 / DF} * Target Fear * Power] * Field} * Element]
Archers floor[floor{floor[round{floor[(AT * DRGNAT% / 100)] * (LV + 5) * 5 / DF} * Target Fear * Power] * Field} * Element]
  • Note: AT in this formula refers to the total displayed in the status screen and should not be multiplied by the DRGNAT% before input since DRGNAT% is already accounted for.

For simplicity, the section of the formula that accounts for successful inputs, "[0.05(Successful Inputs^2) - 0.05Successful Inputs + 1] * 100," can be replaced with the outputs provided by the chart below. Further below is an abbreviated formula for ease of legibility if using the input replacement chart.

Magic

Magic opens a menu to cast a spell. Spells consume Magic Points, or "MP," and cannot be cast without them. The spell damage formula makes use of variable multipliers such as the fear status or the power up state, which are explained below.

Variable Multipliers

Spell Damage Formula
Note: DRGNMAT% refers to the number seen on the status menu under the Dragoon column and on the MAT row. For Multipliers, please use the Dragoon Spells chart below the damage formula. The "STR %" shown when selecting spells in game is not used in the damage calculation. Instead they could be used to gauge the strength of spells in relation to one another for that specific character, but some of the values contain errors and so generally cannot be considered reliable.

  • Rose Storm halves incoming damage by enabling the Power Up variable multiplier for party members when enemy damage calculation occurs. This can be observed in game as the item Power Up and Rose Storm do not stack. Additionally, attacks which do not include the Power Up state in their damage calculations such as any Rare Monster's Rare Attack and Ghost Commander's Haunting Bolt completely ignore Rose Storm.

Special

The "Special" command only appears once all three party members have their SP meters at maximum capacity and none are in Dragoon form. Using it transforms all party members into Dragoon form and changes the background into the Dragoon Space[7] matching the element of the character who initiated the command. The instigator's D'attacks will be completed automatically, bypassing the interactive spirit meter. When the instigator de-transforms, their Dragoon Space ends and the background reverts to its original appearance.

Variable Multipliers
The "Field" multiplier seen in several damage formulas is only applied when Dragoon Space is in effect. Despite the graphical appearance of Dragoon Space for Dragoon Spells that have "Dragon" in their name, the Field multiplier does not apply.

  • Field - if the attack element neither matches nor is the opposite of special field = (1), otherwise [(1) + (Attack Element)]
    • Attack Element - if the attack element matches the special field then (1 / 2) or if it's the opposite element then -(1 / 2)

Dragoon Space approximately increases elemental damage matching the character's element by 50%, while halving damage of the opposing element. For example, Dart's Dragoon Space increases  Fire -elemental damage while reducing  Water -elemental damage for all allies and enemies. Therefore, party members whose elements oppose one another will weaken each other when in their respective Dragoon Space.

Trivia

  1. One of the influences for the art style of Dragoons was H.R. Giger.[8] Earlier in development, Dragoons were slated to have a more grotesque appearance to an extent. Concept art of this style can be seen here: Missing Link. A portion of this art style remains as Miranda's torso armor in Dragoon form.
  2. All Dragoons have a maximum flight speed of 1,200 kilometers per hour, meaning they can just barely break the sound barrier, and some even have the ability to teleport.[9]
