Welcome back to another Severed Sundays! Monoxide here. This week was another slow one in terms of new features, but big for the game engine. I’ve been working on major behind the scenes changes that have taken up most of my dev time. More on that in a bit.
Previously on Severed Chains…
In our last playthrough, we got to Deningrad. It’s a very exposition-heavy area, so we spent most of the stream in conversations and watching cutscenes. We did take a close look Santa Cla–I mean Bishop Dille, and Drew did their best (or worst) impression of him.
We also got our first look at the Wingly Forest, but let’s be honest here. We all know that enlarging characters is the main reason people tune in. Embiggening?
Make sure you catch our next stream for more!
Soa-ing the Seeds for the Future
A lot more is going on engine-side. Aside from a handful of bugfixes, I’m working on rewriting the scripting engine. This is a pretty big deal because most of the game runs on scripts. The original script engine is a bit of a black box. Extremely difficult to work with — and make changes to. This really limits our modding abilities, and makes script bugs very hard to fix.
The new script engine is designed for debugging, and paves the way for editing scripts, and even writing new ones. Hello brand new maps!
Stay Tuned
For those of you who don’t know, I’m doing dev streams every Wednesday, 8:00 PM UTC-4 on our YouTube channel (you’re subscribed to us, right?) These streams are a mixture of coding and chatting with other developers who are contributing to Severed Chains.
Last week I chatted with Baldur who is working on a test harness that is able to control the game without any user input. We’ll use this mainly for automated testing, but keep an eye out for a new gameplay experience coming to our streams in the future. 👀
Support the Project
Special thanks to Zack and Vorthod for their monthly support on Ko-Fi, and BigEZFrench for their recent donation. Monetary support means I can spend more of my work hours focused on Severed Chains. If you have some spare cash and would like to show your support, you can donate to my Ko-Fi page here, or become a monthly supporter (with perks!)
