Happy Wednesday, yall. Today the focus is community moderation. Generally we are doing okay, but with the constant growth on multiple social networks it behooves us to seek out moderation assistance. I’ll list some of the qualities we’re looking for as well as a link to a form that must be filled out in order to apply.

The Role

As a volunteer moderator, The main focus is to keep occasional watch over a hub of community members and act appropriately when any conflicts come up, small or large. You’ll occasionally be talking with other moderators and staff to discuss more nuanced issues before taking action, as well as potential policy updates to ensure our rules and guidelines are always taking good care of the fandom.

Where?

Right now we’re looking for moderators on Reddit and Discord. Approved applicants will only be on one platform or the other, not both.

Qualities

While experience is not outright required for this help request, we’re hoping to approve a few new moderators who have some prior experience. Some training will be available for those who need it. For Discord moderation, anyone accepted will begin as a Junior Moderator for a minimum of 30 days. Here is some of what we’re looking for in terms of qualities:

  • Work/Life/Volunteer balance. This is a volunteer position, and must not be treated like a job. If you want to be a casual junior moderator on the side, that’s okay. If you want to take it a little more seriously or devote a bit more time, that’s okay too. Just be safe and take good care of yourself. Moderators may step down at any time – please give advance notice when possible.
  • Good communication skills overall: direct, sensitive, good listening. Can comprehend and convey policy clearly.
  • Observe the fine balance between accountability and forgiveness.
  • Support policies enforced by a respective platform. For example, on Discord, we are required to follow their global Community Guidelines and Terms of Service and must reflect that on the LoD Discord server.
  • Lead by example: Staff are not above the rules and guidelines. Be kind. Avoid power trips, passive aggression, et cetera. You can be cheeky or sarcastic, but don’t use them as crutches.
  • Identify obviously-inappropriate content that violates community guidelines and take action – such as removing any links to rom downloads and notifying the poster that it is not allowed (citing the guidelines/rules).
  • For an in-progress conflict, focus on de-escalation and encourage all parties to take a break / disengage.
  • When you’re unsure of how to handle a particular issue, consult with staff.

How To Apply

Fill out this Google Form to apply. Thank you for any and all consideration! Let’s keep the LoD fandom a safe and fabulous place to be.
