Hello and welcome to a new blog series! Drew here, alongside a few other volunteers. We’re working together to create a digest of recurring progress on the Severed Chains platform – the custom re-written game engine that is well on its way to running LoD better than emulators can, as well as supporting more mods. This will also include our livestream content to a degree. I’m tentatively naming this set of articles “Severed Sundays.” Yes, today is Monday, but we didn’t want to wait another week.

What can you expect? We’re starting with the basics: a changelog of what gets added or improved, occasional screenshots, short video clips, and perhaps some teasers for future builds! Sometimes it will be me writing, other times it may be Monoxide. We’re playing it by ear for the moment. Last week.. – I really should call this series Last Week Tonight, but that name is very much taken. Actually, let me start two weeks (9 days) ago.

December 2nd: NoDart

We dropped a big surprise on everyone with the reveal of Dart being an optional party member. It works so well that, during the fight with Virage, Haschel performed the signature leap into the air that’s usually Dart’s exclusive thing… and punched a Virage in the face!!! In addition, players can also choose to run solo or duo teams in combat. It’s a big deal.

This stream was pretty special. Not only was it the anniversary of LoD’s release in Japan, but we also had plenty of cool things to show off. I started by rotating the easel in the Portraitist Girl’s house in Bale, to show what Lavitz’ picture looks like in-game. I’ve been wanting to see it for 20 years, so I know everyone else was excited when I shared that. Also got a good look at Albert’s 3D model as a king: it looks pretty good, but something about his eyes looks a bit too.. intense.

From there we went on to fight Virage without Dart in the party. Dart has a scripted jump-finisher here, but thanks to Monoxide’s good coding that’s not an issue. Haschel had no problem running up and punching Virage in the face. Moving on to the Home of Gigantos, we confronted Gehrich and got Dart’s Dragoon Spirit back. Attended Kate & Lynn’s wedding – I just call them KateLynn jointly. To finish the night, I shared some hidden animations in the game files thanks to help from DooMMetaL.

December 9th – SOUNDS!!11!111

This past Friday, we had yet another big surprise for everyone. Monoxide worked really hard for a week straight, enabling sound effects! I have to admit that after eight episodes of no in-game sound, I was super excited to get all those iconic sound effects back. This also includes most of the ambient tracks that play, such as seaside water waves or campfires.

Fair warning: for now, there is a slight delay in all the sounds; a few hundred milliseconds. There are also a few audio glitches, which become more pronounced when Dart is not set as slot 1 in the party. One time I performed an addition, one of the sounds the game called up was the opening of a treasure chest! Whew.

We kicked off the livestream with our surprises (new display stand, addition of sound effects). Went on to fight Lenus, which proved more difficult due to some **strategic missteps. Managed to win the fight though! After that, I got obsessed with enlarging various 3D models in scenes to finally see them in better detail. Quite worth it though – the flying creature in the Barrens is a lot more detailed than we expected! We went through the Queen Fury segment, and concluded the livestream by encountering the Saint Louvia / Phantom Ship. Oh, and Corey gave us a preview of music functionality, resulting in really bad bagpipe sounds over at Seles.

** Drew listened to Monoxide on his recommendation to use Special.

I like the posts acting as a recap of what was streamed that week. It’s nice to have that out there for when we can’t make it to the stream.

I’d recommend the screenshots be larger or able to click on to enlarge. I’d like to see them in more detail if possible.

That aside, excellent work as always. I played this game like 15 years ago and have wanted to revisit it. It’s nice to sift through it slowly with the community this time.

    Keep up the great work!
