Items are consumable resources providing a variety of effects. They are useable either in or out of battle, or both, with some items even having differing effects depending on when they are used. Because there is a limit of 32 items that may be held at a time and magic is cast mostly by using items, item management is fairly important. Items are useable in battle by selecting the "Item" command. Outside of battle, items may be used from the"Use Item" option on the In-Game Menu accessible by pressing the Triangle button. Items which cannot be used outside of battle may be viewed, sorted, and discarded from the "Inventory" option.
Used items are consumable resources that provide a variety of effects that are organized below into Recovery, Attack, Repeat, and Miscellaneous. Only 32 may be held at a time, with attempts to open chests containing more resulting in the message, "Cannot carry any more items." When defeating an Enemy that drops an item while already at the cap, the game gives the option to trade the item out before being discarded. Most items can be bought in item shops, but a rare few are only attainable via treasure chests or from defeating enemies. While all of them can be used in battle, some items can also be used or discarded from the Pause Menu and may have different effects as explained in the table below.

Other items include Goods, or quest items, which are important items often necessary for story progression. They can be viewed from the "Goods" option on the In-Game Menu but may not be discarded. Sometimes, they are removed from inventory by story events. Equipment is another type of item that modifies the party characters' stats and combat behavior. Equipment may also be viewed, sorted, and discarded from the "Inventory" option but must be equipped with the "Equipment" option.
Armed items are permanent resources like armor, weapons, and accessories which modify a party member's stats and combat behavior. Only 255 may be held at a time, although most will never reach that limit. Most Armed items can be bought in weapon shops, but a rare few are only attainable via treasure chests or from defeating enemies. These items are explained more in Equipment.

Goods do not contribute to either item cap and cannot be discarded or sold. They hold no function besides serving as a reminder of where the party has been within the story, as they are attained or lost as the game progresses.

Recovery Items
Recovery Items
Recovery items bestow an assortment of beneficial effects. Most are useable both inside and outside of battle. The exceptions are Angel's Prayer because knocked out characters are revived with 1 HP after each battle, Depetrifier because the Petrifaction status ailment is removed after each battle, and Recovery Ball.
Recovery items restore HP, MP, SP, or Cure Status Ailments. Most can be used outside of battle with the exception of Angel's Prayer, Depetrifier, Recovery Ball, and Spirit Potion.

Attack Items inflict elemental magic damage to enemies. They are not usable outside of battle. Multiplying items can be boosted for up to 268% damage by repeatedly tapping the Cross button when directed.
Attack items inflict elemental magic damage to enemies and cannot be used outside of battle. Within their item descriptions are a few shorthand terms which help convey how the items work. <br>
S targets a single enemy. <br>
A targets all enemies. <br>
Multi can be boosted for up to 268% damage by repeatedly tapping the X button when the on-screen graphic appears. <br>
Powerful deal more damage than those with multi even when at 268% (with the notable exception of Psychedelic Bomb and Psychedelic Bomb X.)

Repeat Items
Repeat Items
Repeat items are especially useful items with a variety of effects such as buffing characters or debuffing enemies. Unlike the other items in this article, repeat items are semi-consumable. They may only be used once per battle, but they are returned to the player after each battle. Most of them are found exclusively in chests in the world with the exception of the Psychedelic Bomb X, which is acquired through a story event. Two of these items can be permanently missed.
Items with (repeat) in their description are unique in that they are returned to the inventory after each battle if they are used. As each can only be found once, selling or discarding them renders them gone forever. Pandemonium and Material Shield are both found in locations that once left cannot be returned to, making them unobtainable. Likewise, they can all be made unobtainable if the point of no return in Mayfil is taken without acquiring them. Most of them are found exclusively in chests with the exception of the Smoke Ball and Psychedelic Bomb X.

Miscellaneous Items
Miscellaneous items include status ailment-inflicting items usable like attack items and two other novel items. Status items are useless in boss battles because all enemies present are immune to all status ailments.
Miscellaneous items are for the remaining items that do not fit into the other categories.

Recovery items restore HP, MP, SP, or Cure Status Ailments. Most can be used outside of battle with the exception of Angel's Prayer, Depetrifier, Recovery Ball, and Spirit Potion.

Attack Items

Attack items inflict elemental magic damage to enemies and cannot be used outside of battle. Within their item descriptions are a few shorthand terms which help convey how the items work.
S targets a single enemy.
A targets all enemies.
Multi can be boosted for up to 268% damage by repeatedly tapping the X button when the on-screen graphic appears.
Powerful deal more damage than those with multi even when at 268% (with the notable exception of Psychedelic Bomb and Psychedelic Bomb X.)

Repeat Items

Items with (repeat) in their description are unique in that they are returned to the inventory after each battle if they are used. As each can only be found once, selling or discarding them renders them gone forever. Pandemonium and Material Shield are both found in locations that once left cannot be returned to, making them unobtainable. Likewise, they can all be made unobtainable if the point of no return in Mayfil is taken without acquiring them. Most of them are found exclusively in chests with the exception of the Smoke Ball and Psychedelic Bomb X.

Item Effect Acquisition
Magic Stone of Signet
Magic Sig Stone
Prevents one enemy from acting for three of their turns. Affects all Minor Enemies except Knight of Sandora (Seles), Hellena Warden (with Fruegel), Guftas, and Rodriguez, but also affects the Boss Extra Crafty Thief (with Mappi.) Marshland: take detour on boat, eventually selecting "move to the left" to find it in a chest on a mossy island.
Pandemonium Forces enemies to target the affected character, although enemies can still use attacks which target the entire party. Affects all Minor Enemies except Knight of Sandora (Seles), Hellena Warden (with Fruegel), Guftas, and Rodriguez. Hellena Prison, second visit. Location cannot be visited after leaving, so it can be missed.
Material Shield Grants immunity to physical attacks to one character for 3 turns. Black Castle: after Kongol boss fight, in a chest hidden behind a pillar just before entering the throne room of Emperor Doel. Location cannot be visited after leaving, so it can be missed.
Speed Up Doubles the speed of one character for 3 turns. Valley of Corrupted Gravity: directly after passing through the gate, in a chest below where the party stands and talks.
Power Up Halves all damage received and grants a +50% multiplier to all damage dealt for a single character for 3 turns. This effect is exclusive with Power Down, with the latest one overwriting the other. Kadessa: in the room with many moving platforms, ride the platform that moves up and down up to the fourth floor to find the chest.
Speed Down Halves the speed of one enemy for 3 turns. Affects all enemies. Mountain of Mortal Dragon: directly before facing the Divine Dragon, in a chest hidden behind rocks on the right hand side. Not to be confused with the obvious chest which contains a Body Purifier.
Magic Shield Grants immunity to magic attacks to one character for 3 turns. Snowfield: when sliding down the slope, pick the left side of the sign and activate the 1st and 3rd prompts to land on the chest.
Smoke Ball Guarantees escape from encounters if the escape chance is not 0. Snowfield: rewarded for defeating the optional boss Polter Helm
Power Down Halves all damage dealt and inflicts a +50% multiplier to all damage received for a single character for 3 turns. Death Frontier: from the first oasis move up one screen, left one screen, and up two screens to find the chest.
Psychedelic Bomb X
Psyche Bomb X
Magic attack item that deals very high non-elemental multi damage to all enemies. Aglis: during Savan's test of courage, all questions must be answered correctly:
Kongol - "Take Doel's sword."
Miranda - "For the world" and "I cannot die now,"
Albert - "I cannot do that."
Meru - "I still cannot die."
Haschel - "I couldn't stop her."
Rose - Answer does not change the outcome
Dart - "I will save Shana no matter what!"
